Hello, parents! I'm Amanda Nolan, a Marriage and Family Therapist, and I know how challenging it can be to manage screen time for your children and teens, especially during the busyness of back to school. With screens being such a big part of our daily lives, finding engaging and screen-free activities is essential for your child's development and family bonding. Here are some great ideas to help reduce screen time and make the most of fall season.
1. Outdoor Adventures
Encourage your kids to explore the outdoors. Hiking, biking, or simply walking in nature can be a refreshing break from screens. Organize family picnics, visit local parks, or pass out “Gratitude Cards” with friendly neighbors.
2. Creative Arts and Crafts
Arts and crafts provide a fantastic way to keep hands and minds busy. Set up a craft station at home with supplies like paints, markers, and clay. Encourage your children to create art projects, build models, or even try DIY home decor - this one happens to be my favorite!
3. Sports and Physical Activities
Physical activity contributes to a healthy lifestyle. Enroll your kids in local sports teams, swimming lessons, or martial arts classes. Even simple activities like playing catch, frisbee, or setting up an obstacle course in the backyard can be great fun and exercise. Anyone up for chalk on the sidewalk?
4. Gardening
Gardening can be a rewarding and educational experience. Start a small garden together, whether it's a vegetable patch, flower bed, or container garden. This hands-on activity teaches responsibility and patience while providing a sense of accomplishment.
5. Reading Challenges
Cultivate an interest in reading by setting up a summer reading challenge. Visit the local library and let your kids choose books that interest them. Create a cozy reading nook at home and join them in reading time to make it a family affair.
6. Cooking and Baking
Involve your kids in the kitchen with age-appropriate cooking and baking projects. From making simple snacks to preparing full meals, this activity can teach valuable life skills and foster creativity. Plus, it's a delicious way to spend time together! Also, kids and teens tend to share stressful situations they are experiencing at home or school when spending intimate time with parents, so don't be surprised if tears or hugs are shared while cooking.
7. Volunteering
Teach your children the importance of giving back to the community. Find local volunteer opportunities, such as helping at animal shelters, food banks, or community gardens. Volunteering can be a fulfilling and eye-opening experience for kids and teens. With a history of being housing insecure, I personally understand the effect it can have on suffering individuals and families. Giving to the less fortunate puts a smile on their face and hope in their hearts- a positive impact that can last for a lifetime.
8. Family Game Nights
Board games and card games are a fantastic way to bring the family together. Choose games that are suitable for all ages and make it a weekly tradition. This promotes family bonding and strategic thinking without the need for screens. Have you tried “Uno ALL WILD”?!

Conclusion
Reducing screen time doesn't have to be a struggle. With these engaging and enjoyable activities, you can help your children and teens have a fun, productive, and screen-free fall. Remember, the goal is to create lasting memories and foster a healthy, balanced lifestyle for your family. Enjoy!
